The vastly expansive history of studies on Augustine shows no sign of slowing the pace of its growth as the nearly 50,000 titles which constitute the rich secondary literature about him and his work increases by anywhere between 200-300 titles each year. From this wealth of studies, the Augustinus-Lexikon (AL) and the Corpus Augustinianum Gissense (CAG) CD-Rom have made nearly 32,600 titles electronically retrievable using the entry words of the Augustinus-Lexikon.

Whereas until now only the authors’ names, titles of publication, genres, publishing dates and locations were available, since August 2000 users of this Internet service can also retrieve data by employing search terms based on the list of entry words associated with the AL:

For example, users interested in research on Augustine’s concept of ‹ordo› can locate titles of studies which correspond to this keyword through the CAG data base.

The Augustine secondary literature databank

As with other catalogues of its kind there is a constant need to review the accuracy of the keywords with which the titles of studies are paired. For this reason, users will benefit from a concerted effort by all to send corrections to the editorial offices of the CAG. It is equally desirable that authors of new publications concerning Augustine send the relevant information to the editorial offices of the CAG so that indication of these publications can be posted as quickly and accurately as possible. It is important that along with publication data, authors include a list of relevant keywords from the entry words of the AL. Authors of studies on Augustine will find that this data base is the quickest way to ensure the widest possible diffusion of information concerning their work.
