The CAG 2 contains the literary oeuvre – consisting in its present state of more than 100 works and 5 million words – of Augustine of Hippo (354-430), professor in rhetorics, bishop, philosopher and probably the most important theologian of the West, as the reception of his works throughout history testifies. The stock of texts is supplemented by those letters, which are belonging to the corpus of the Augustinian Epistulae, but are not written by Augustine himself. The CAG 2 is edited by Cornelius Petrus Mayer OSA, director of the Center for Augustinian Studies (ZAF) at Würzburg (Germany) and chief editor of the international Augustinus-Lexikon (AL). The digitised corpus assembles its base texts from the best avaiable printed editions - critical ones where possible. Occasional misprints and mistakes in these editions have, for the most part, been corrected. The text of the CAG 2 corresponds with the page and line break of the printed editions and allows for the reading of complete passages, chapters or works. Additionally, the CAG 2 has been prepared linguistically in a number of ways. The stock of texts is lemmatised, i.e. every word form occuring in a text is categorised under its base form and will be found by a search request for this form – a valuable help in view of the abundance of forms in Latin language. Furthermore, all quotations given by Augustine (e.g. from the Bible and from classical authors within his own works) are categorised and designated in colours, and their sources are duly recorded. Moreover additional information on the Letters (‹Epistulae›) and on the Exposition of the Psalms (‹Enarrationes in Psalmos›) can be requested (e.g. date of composition etc.). There is also a dynamic literature database of more than 29 300 entries included in the CAG 2, consisting of secondary sources dedicated to Augustine’s life and works, and enriched with extensive bibliographical information (e.g. keywords concerning the subject matter of a publication). Owners of a CAG 2 licence are enabled to refresh the database by updates, which are provided on our homepage (www.augustinus.de) or on CD-ROM for free. Compared to the first edition, beside a lot of improvements in form and content, a totally new retrieval software was developed for the CAG 2 through cooperation with the Competence Center for Electronic Publishing and Information Retrieval in Humanities at the University of Trier. On a comfortable and multilingual (German, English, French, Spanish) user interface, which is easy to use, the CAG 2 offers many functions and tools to orientate oneself in the Augustinian corpus and to work on it, e.g. several windows at the same time, special indices for base forms, quotations and greek words, indication of the relative frequency of each word, options to edit, to save and to print one’s own texts or retrievals etc. The operation of the CAG 2 is supported by a detailed and coloured high-class manual. This comprehensive compilation of primary and secondary sources renders the CAG 2 the best research tool available for studies on Augustine. System requirements: PC Pentium III or higher, WIN 95/98/2000/NT/XP (Macintosh-Version - Mac OS X 10.3/10.4); 32 MB RAM; Graphics: SVGA, min. 1024x768, 1152x864 recommended.
